What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body. The goal of acupuncture is to restore the flow of energy, known as qi (pronounced “chee”), through the body’s meridians, or energy channels. According to TCM theory, disruptions or imbalances in the flow of qi can lead to illness or discomfort, and acupuncture aims to rebalance this energy flow.

What to Expect during my First Acupuncture Visit.

- Consultation & Exam: During the initial consultation and exam, Dr. Bradley will discuss your health concerns, medical history, and any symptoms you may be experiencing. Based on your symptoms and presenting concerns Dr. Bradley may also perform various exams in order to further assess your concerns.
- Treatment: During treatment Dr. Bradley will insert thin, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points on the body. These points are located along the body’s meridians and are chosen based on your symptoms and individual needs.
- Needle Insertion: The needles used in acupuncture are very thin, so most people experience minimal discomfort during insertion. Some may feel a slight tingling or dull ache as the needle is inserted, but this sensation typically subsides quickly. The needles are typically left in place for around 15 to 30 minutes while the patient relaxes.
- Stimulation: In some cases, Dr. Amy may gently manipulate the needles by twirling them or applying heat or electrical stimulation to enhance the treatment’s effects. This is believed to help promote the flow of qi (chee) and encourage the body’s natural healing processes.
- Removal: After the treatment session is complete, Dr. Amy carefully removes the needles, and you may be given additional recommendations for self-care, such as dietary or lifestyle changes, herbal remedies, or exercises to support the healing process.
How does Acupuncture Work?
Acupuncture is believed to be effective in treating various ailments through several mechanisms, according to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) principles and some modern scientific theories. While the exact mechanisms are still being researched, here are some ways acupuncture may work to address health issues:
- Balancing Qi Flow: According to TCM theory, acupuncture helps to balance the flow of qi, or energy, through the body’s meridians. By inserting needles into specific acupuncture points along these meridians, acupuncture is thought to remove blockages or imbalances in the flow of qi, thereby restoring health and promoting the body’s natural healing processes.
- Modulating Neurotransmitters: Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the release of various neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine. These chemicals play a role in regulating pain perception, mood, and overall well-being. By increasing the production of these neurotransmitters, acupuncture may help alleviate pain, reduce stress, and improve mood.
- Regulating the Autonomic Nervous System: Acupuncture has been found to influence the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, and immune response. Research suggests that acupuncture may help regulate sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity, promoting a state of relaxation and balance in the body.
- Modulating Inflammatory Response: Some studies suggest that acupuncture may have anti-inflammatory effects by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increasing the activity of anti-inflammatory cytokines. This may help alleviate symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, allergies, and autoimmune diseases.
- Improving Blood Circulation: Acupuncture has been shown to increase blood flow to specific areas of the body. Improved circulation can facilitate the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, promote tissue healing, and reduce muscle tension and pain.
- Regulating Hormonal Balance: Acupuncture may help regulate hormonal balance by influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the endocrine system. This can have a wide range of effects on various bodily functions, including menstrual health, fertility, and stress response.
